Happy Thanksgiving!

HPS team,

As we enter the Thanksgiving break, please pause and be mindful of the amazing team we have here in Howell. A team that always puts our kids and families first! On this note, I wanted shared a few updates about various members of the Highlander team as well as district happenings.

Support and Service Persons of the Year - we had the pleasure of recognizing and honoring Martha Mendoza and Karen Socia today as the Service and Support Persons of the Year.

Mrs. Mendoza and Mrs. Socia were selected for this honor by a committee of district stakeholders who recognized their dedication and commitment to our students, families, and staff.

Displaying IMG_2430.JPGMrs. Mendoza goes above and beyond to ensure that each student achieves success. In addition to supporting our HHS students who are English language learners, Mrs. Mendoza often takes the time to assist the families of her students. She has been known to take her own time to help interpret and translate documents for students parents and families. These are just some of the examples of why Mrs. Mendoza was selected for this honor.

Displaying IMG_2432.JPGMrs. Socia is one of the first people visitors to Southeast meet and she ensures that each visitor is welcomed with a friendly smile. Each day, Mrs. Socia juggles phone calls, students and staff who need assistance and whatever else comes her way, all while remaining calm and positive. Mrs. Socia handles any situation that comes her way with a cool head and with the best interest of students and school in mind. She ensures that the needs of all of the students at Southeast are met. During the holidays, Mrs. Socia acts as a liaison between the school and community agencies to ensure that students and their families have a memorable holiday. I think this quote from one of her nomination letters sums it up best “Karen Socia is one of Howell Schools’ friendliest and hardest working employees."

On behalf of the Board of Education and the entire Howell Public Schools team, congratulations Martha and Karen. We are honored to work with you!

HHS Performing Arts Puts on High School Musical -
under the leadership of our amazing staff, our students continue to shine in their productions. High School Musical continued this tradition. On Friday evening, the cast and crew were thrown a curveball when we lost power. The amazing thing is that they just kept performing, giving true meaning to the expression, the show must go on.

First Robotics - during my visit to Southeast last week, I visited with some of the Southeast robotics team, the Mustache Monsters, who were preparing for the First Robotics competition. Along with the Mustache Monsters, the Brick Bosses, and Team Kaos from HPS qualified for the state competition. Thanks to the support of our staff and strong partnerships with the community we continue to expand our robotics opportunities across the district.

I also visited Ms. Cain's new lab and observed her introducing the Launch Cycle with the students in a station structure that empowered the students to engage in various activities, challenge one another to generate ideas, and create.

Displaying IMG_2413.JPGELL at Southwest - at Southwest, I enjoyed visiting our ELL program. I am especially impressed with the inclusive model that SW has developed; a model that is grounded in a philosophy that we all grow from learning experiences that consistently include multiple perspectives, backgrounds, etc.

I also had the pleasure of eating lunch with some SW students. They certainly are not afraid to challenge my thinking when they discuss their ideas on how to help improve the district.

We the People Hearings - last Friday, under the leadership of Kristine Shantry, our HHS We the People team held their District Hearings. The students prepared arguments on a particular issue, presented them, and were then asked questions by our guest judges, Prosecutor Vailliencourt and Congressman Mike Bishop to name a few.

Unified Sports at Parker MS - the Unified Sports Club at Parker met for the first time. Unified Sports is a affiliate of the Special Olympics and provides opportunities for students of all abilities to be leaders in their schools by promoting equality and acceptance.
These leadership activities help students with and without intellectual disabilities find their voices by teaching them to become change agents striving for respect and inclusion.
-Special Olympics Unified Strategy for Schools and Youth
We are able to offer this opportunity to our students through a grant secured by our amazing staff.

As you know, last weekend many in the area lost power; the high school campus did as well. On the eve of us hosting an MHSAA state football semi-final football game and the third night of the play, this caused some stress on our system. In short, we moved the game to Parker and welcomed about 8000 people from out of town to the community. We received a number of very kind remarks about their experience at the game. All of this was due to the amazing HPS team. I wanted to specifically recognize John Young, Chris Eaton, Tom Gould, Amy Pashak, Tom Aldapa, Aaron Metz, Bruce Grotenhuis, Stephanie Heslip, and the HHS GCA crew for their tremendous support to make sure everything went smoothly.

Please take the time this weekend to take care of yourself, enjoy time with family and friends, and rest. Amy and I are looking forward to a weekend of good food, relaxing, the Fantasy of Lights Parade, and not running our kids to various activities. Happy Thanksgiving!

Honoring our Veterans

HPS team,

I would like to thank and recognize all of our past and current veterans, today and everyday. Today the high school leadership class will hold its annual Veterans Day Assembly. The day will start with a light breakfast for Veterans and their families followed by a wonderful program honoring their service to our great country.

On Tuesday evening our community voted to reelect current board members Stacy Pasini, Marcus Wilcox, and Mike Yenshaw and to elect Courtney Tarara to the Board of Education. I am grateful for our returning Board members’ continued commitment to serving Howell Public Schools and for Courtney’s desire to serve our community. While they were not elected, I would like to thank Leslie Bohnett, Colleen Ontko, and Mitchell Zajac for their willingness to serve on the Board of Education.

Recently I attended the “Taste of Voyager,” an event put on my Mrs. Sharon Barlow’s class to celebrate the completion of their Delicious Drink Recipe project. Using project based learning, students in Mrs. Barlow’s first-grade class at Voyager Elementary completed research and conducted taste tests to create a new drink recipe and develop an explanatory paper on how to make their drink. The project combined many academic areas such as math, reading and science and allowed students to see how that they are learning today will be using in the real world. In addition, our students in the culinary program at HHS partnered with these students to help them with their project.

Last week the Parker Middle School Choirs held their annual Madrigal Dinner.
A Madrigal Dinner is a modern day recreation of the Renaissance feasts held in the Middle Ages. The evening featured great food prepared by students in the high school’s culinary arts program and entertainment provided by the middle school students. We had a number of staff and community members attend. The kids do an amazing job with this authentic experience. Next weekend the Howell High School Performing Arts Department will present “Disney’s High School Musical.” For more information, please visit https://goo.gl/L1cQbw

Have a wonderful weekend!

Empowering students to be...

Empowering students to be successful citizens. Vision statements can often times simply be words on paper, a website, etc., with little evidence or action plans in place to demonstrate an organization's commitment to achieving it. At HPS, we are firmly committed to this vision and I have witnessed it many times this fall.

2016-17 HPS Teacher of the Year - I and several HPS team members recently had the pleasure of surprising Mark Leahy with the 2016-17 Teacher of the Year. Mark has built a program that truly empowers students with skills that they will need to enter a trades program or the workforce. More importantly, Mark's commitment to develop personal connections with each student is the foundation of this program. Said best by one of the students I visited with at the site, "Mr. Leahy has our back." Congratulations to Mark on this well deserved recognition.

Building Visits - I have enjoyed visiting the buildings this fall. My goal is to get into every classroom in the district. My intent with these visits is to make purposeful connections with the students and staff. Thus far, I have visited Hutchings, Highlander Way, and Northwest. I am so proud of the opportunities you provide our students each and every day to be empowered in the learning process.

At Hutchings and Northwest, students were excited to show me their reading selections. By providing intentional opportunities for choice, students clearly own their learning.

At Highlander Way, students have been afforded opportunities to have their voices heard through the development of social contracts that serve as a mutual framework for the class.

Last week, I had an opportunity to visit Ms. Haskins' class at HHS. The students were sharing their personal poetry with their peers. The learning environment is one in which students feel comfortable taking risks in order to engage deeply in their learning.

I also had the pleasure of visiting Mr. McDowell's classroom at HHS in which teams of students were empowered to create a food court in the HHS cafeteria; all in through the lens of economics.

I look forward to continuing my building visits this fall. In addition, please let me know if there is ever a good opportunity to drop into your classroom. I will certainly do my very best to make it happen.

District Logo and Messaging One of the goals of the Strategic Plan is to develop a cohesive district identity and culture to support students. To this end, we are working to develop messaging and a visual identity that unifies the district. To support this work, we have conducted some discovery meetings with district stakeholders to gather some initial information. I look forward to providing you with future updates around this work.

Facilities Utilization Process - The next meeting for this committee is scheduled on Monday, November 7. In anticipation of a recommendation from the committee, we have scheduled a Community Forum on Monday, November 14 at 5:00 p.m. at Parker. I will update all staff after the next meeting.

Coffee Chats - In our efforts to stay connected to our parents and the community, I held the first Coffee Chat at the Highlander Restaurant. I was pleased with the turnout and level of engagement. I plan to host more Coffee Chats throughout the school year.

Taking It Personally: Why Gender Violence is an Issue for the Community - I attended this speaking engagement on Tuesday evening at the Howell Theater hosted by LACASA. Dr. Katz shared an important message that connects to our commitment to address bullying in HPS. His Ted Talk summarizes his message at the Theater. We plan to partner with LACASA to utilize the Mentoring in Violence Prevention program in the near future.

Homecoming Week and Happenings

HPS Team,

I hope everyone is enjoying Homecoming Week! It's been fun watching the students so engaged in the activities this week. Our various athletic teams participated in a window decorating competition downtown; organized by our parent boosters. I had the opportunity to judge the windows on Monday afternoon. It's a great partnership between the district and our downtown businesses. If you get a chance, check it out.

Enjoy the rest of the week's festivities! I hope to see many of you at the parade and the game this Friday.

Some happenings...

Facilities Utilization Process
I provided a status report to the Board on the Facilities Utilization Process at the September 26 board meeting. As a reminder, I am holding an optional staff meeting today, September 28, at 4:30 p.m. in the board room to discuss this process.

5D+
The 5D+ leadership team will participate in the fifth (of six) full day training sessions today. I would like to thank this team for their commitment and leadership with this process.

Legislative Update
The Legislature passed and the Governor signed the third grade reading bill. While the bill is not perfect, it has been significantly improved since it was first introduced last year. Specifically, it increases local control when determining retention. I am still waiting on a full analysis and we will provide these details when available. Lastly, the legislation takes effect for third graders beginning in the 2019-20 school year. Free Press article link.

Have a great week! Go Highlanders!

Off and running...

HPS Team,

A lot has happened since Opening Day at Parker. Students are settling into a routine, families have attended Open Houses at all the levels, fall sports are in full swing, and a little fall weather seems to have arrived.

Amy and I enjoyed celebrating our twins (Jack and Ryan) 8th birthday this week. As we settle into a new school year, we will certainly experience some increased stress from time to time. When this occurs, let's remind one another of those things that are most important and always maintain perspective.

As we conclude our second week I wanted to take an opportunity to update you on some district issues as well as some highlights from around #HighlanderNation.

District Updates

Facilities Utilization Process - One of the objectives included in the district’s strategic plan is to review our facility utilization and ensure that we are making the best use of our resources. To this end, I presented a scope and process to the Board of Education on August 22. You can review this presentation at the following link. The Board approved this scope and process at the September 12 meeting.

In turn, the Facilities Utilization Committee (consisting of board members, teachers, parents, support staff, and administrators) met on September 14 to begin this process. The Committee discussed the guiding principles and inputs for the process and developed options to examine in more detail (in a subcommittee structure). The three options being explored by the subcommittees are as follows: redistricting, building consolidation, and grade reconfiguration.

I will hold two community forums on Monday, September 19 at 6:00 p.m. at Parker and September 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the Board Office to share the scope and process with community members. In addition, I will hold an optional staff forum on September 28 at 4:30 p.m. at the Board Office. You are welcome to attend any of these forums if you are interested in learning more about this process.

I will continue to update you on this process.

Board of Education Election - In the upcoming November 8 election, there are four open seats on the HPS Board of Education. Three currently seated board members (Mike Yenshaw - President, Stacy Pasini - Vice President, Marcus Wilcox - Trustee) are running and three additional candidates (Leslie Bohnett, Courtney Tarara, Mitchell Zajac) are actively seeking one of the open seats. We are fortunate to have such interest from our community in serving our organization.

MacGregor's Message - Every other week of the school year I send an email communication to our families. The purpose of the communication is to provide updates on district happenings and future plans. I also post this on my page on the website. I will share these with you for your reference. The 9/16 edition is linked here.

Capital Improvement Projects - As you can imagine, in a district our size (1.5 million square feet of buildings, 167 square miles of land area), we always have capital improvements to address. With very little general fund flexibility, we have committed the funds from the Latson property sale to address some of the prioritized capital improvement needs around the district. This year you will see this through the site improvements at Highlander Way Middle School, the Freshmen Campus, the High School, and some of our elementary playgrounds. The picture below is of the SW ribbon cutting ceremony at their new playground; a monumental fund raising effort by the SW PTO with a small contribution from the district.
And the SW students showing their pride!

We will continue to utilize these funds to address the long-term prioritized capital needs.

Highlights
HHS Student Section Honors Lance Corporal Dominic Ciaramitaro - At the recent Howell vs. South Lyon football game, South Lyon named their stadium after former a graduate and Marine who lost his life serving our country. Our HHS student section showed their support and appreciation for Lance Corporal Dominic Ciaramitaro by honoring his family at halftime.

United Way Day of Caring - Each year a number of our students participate in the United Way Day of Caring which supports our community in so many ways. This year 180 HPS students participated in 16 projects in our community!

In addition, many of our buildings benefited from the gracious support of our community. One such project was completed at Voyager by LOC Federal Credit Union and the before and after can be viewed below.

Legislative Updates
Michigan Education Finance Study (from MASB) - On June 28, 2016, the completed Michigan Education Finance Study (adequacy study) was finally released. This study was required by Public Act 555 of 2015 as part of the package allowing for Proposal 1 and was conducted by Augenblick, Palaich and Associates.

The study was commissioned to determine the sufficient resources needed to provide a quality public education for all pupils and whether our system of funding is equitable. Among other requirements, they were also responsible for determining if school districts receive funds “in a fashion that ensures that all students have an equal opportunity” to become proficient in various subjects.

What, if anything, the Legislature or Governor will do with the recommendations or the results of the study as a whole remains to be seen. We are hopeful the results will impact future School Aid Budget decisions and will work to keep these findings in the forefront as those discussions happen.

The full report is quite lengthy, but the executive summary includes some good information.
